A shootout between two people who knew each other at the Holyoke Mall on Saturday led to the death of a person authorities said was an innocent bystander.
The shooting suspect is in custody and there is no further threat to the public, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni’s office said in a statement late Saturday.
“The Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office are currently conducting a homicide investigation following a shooting that occurred earlier in the evening at the center Holyoke mall in Ingleside,” the statement read.
According to the district attorney’s office, Holyoke police responded to the mall at around 6:59 p.m. to a report of gunshots. A male victim was discovered at the scene and a suspect was immediately taken into custody.
“The victim was an innocent bystander of a confrontation between two other people,” the prosecutor’s office said.
A video posted to social media on Saturday evening and captured by Winston Chen and Marlina Ku showed people shouting and running through the mall.
This is an active homicide investigation currently being conducted by the Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.
