Mike Kafka gets a second interview with the Houston Texans

It looks like New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is a strong candidate for the head coaching job with the Houston Texans.

Kafka will get an in-person interview with the Texans on Wednesday after having a virtual interview on Sunday, per NFL Insider Tom Pelissero.

Kafka, who just completed his only season as the Giants’ offensive coordinator and point guard, also interviewed the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts. Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale also interviewed the Colts.

The Texans fired their last two head coaches, David Culley and Lovie Smith, after one season.

Coach Brian Daboll said the Giants discussed whether Kafka or Martindale were given a head coaching opportunity.

“When you have these interviews coming in, and I’ve been a part of that for the last three seasons, you always have to have a plan because you never know what’s going to happen if (defensive coordinator) Wink (Martindale) gets a job, if (offensive coordinator Mike) Kafka gets a job,” Daboll said. “So you have to go through the whole process. The good thing about being here for second year is you you still have a lot of people in place, going back to what I said about the players, who know how we do things.
